On the first Friday of most months since late 1995, my best friends and I have gone to a different restaurant for dinner. It's sort of the Algonquin Round Table. Without Dorothy Parker. Or the round table.
$ at the end of the review indicates price range for one person with drink, app, entree and desert: $15-20 $$20-35 $$$35-50 $$$$ 50+ (price in parenthesis is the per person price we actually paid).

Restaurants with bold name and are a First Friday Favorite - deemed particular standouts for their uniqueness, fun atmosphere, or excellent food. Requires overall ratings over 4, and at least 2 "FFF" votes.)

Audubon Circle

Eclectic/Pub

839 Beacon St., Audobon Circle
T:
Kenmore

Universal raves for this "Frank Lloyd Wright inspired interior" and the "delicious" food that rises "well above it's pub origins." Even the bathrooms are "gorgeous." $

Mario's*

Italian

69 Church Street, Bay Village
T:
Arlington

"It's Mario's" about sums up the place. Nothing fancy, and it's even a little tacky with "carnival ride" booths, but it's "strangely appealing" and "pleasant in a bizarre way." $

"Terrific food" and "solicitous service" at this Back Bay Indian, but a "wee bit pricey." [Has a superb weekend buffet] $$

Istanbul Cafe *

Turkish

37 Bowdoin Street, Beacon Hill

Charles/MGH

This "charming" "surprisingly romantic" basement serves "hearty" "delicious & different" Turkish food but "too much eggplant" but no variety on the "annoying music loop." $$

Harvey's*

Bistro

99 St. Botolph Street, South End
617.266.3030
T:
Prudential (E-Line)

"Great atmosphere" ("would like it as an apartment") and "exceptional service" (our water glasses were "overflowing"), the food was only "average" to "good." $$$

7/2/98

Penang

Malaysian

685 Washington Street, Chinatown
617-451-6373
T:
Chinatown, Boylston

Diners hated the "kon tiki" at atmosphere and the "unpleasant" food that left some "annoyed" and thinking "everyone else's food looked better." $

Montien

Thai

63 Stuart Street, Theatre District
617-338-5600
T:
NE Medical Center, Boylston

Former tacky-looking Thai newly redone. Decor and food -- but not the clumsy service -- impressed diners. "Excellent Pad Thai" and one dish that almost "burned my face off." $$

Pho Pastuer*

Vietnamese

119 Newbury Street, Back Bay
(617) 262-8200
T:Arlington, Copley

Most praised the "exotic yet accessible" food, others said it was "ok" or "odd." Most thought the decor "uninspired" but the staff "went out of their way" to seat ten with no reservation.$
