On the first Friday of most months since late 1995, my best friends and I have gone to a different restaurant for dinner. It's sort of the Algonquin Round Table. Without Dorothy Parker. Or the round table.
$ at the end of the review indicates price range for one person with drink, app, entree and desert: $15-20 $$20-35 $$$35-50 $$$$ 50+ (price in parenthesis is the per person price we actually paid).

Restaurants with bold name and are a First Friday Favorite - deemed particular standouts for their uniqueness, fun atmosphere, or excellent food. Requires overall ratings over 4, and at least 2 "FFF" votes.)

Cafe 47

Pub Grub

Food: halfstar

Service: halfstar

Overall:

47 Massachusetts Av, Boston

T: Hynes, #1, CT1 Bus

Diner Comments: Everyone expressed "kudos for fitting our [13-person, reservationless] group" last minute, but diners were conflicted over the "average" to "better than expected" food; the "slow", "poorly timed" service; the "bland" decor; and "blasts of cold" from the door "in need of a heavy curtain." While it's a "nice neighborhood cafe"our group clearly "overwhelmed them, and though they "tried hard," but might be better for a "meeting a couple friends to hang out"

Diner Comments: All agreed that the staff of this FF Favorite provided “professional, engaging and efficient service” that was “pretty spectacular considering [the] large group(13)” . The comped pork belly appetizer was “seriously on point.” There were raves about the “delicious”, “tasty” and “yummy” food but the special of day “sounded much better than it actually was.” Décor was “charmingly appropriate” yet of the “standard non-descript Irish” variety and they might want to relocate the coat hooks . Grafton Street “made sure we felt welcome as a large group” and “will definitely be revisited.” $$$ [41]

Food: halfstar

Decor:star

Overall:

130 Dartmouth Street, Boston
617-262-4393
T: Back Bay, Copley

Diner Comments: By far the worst ratings in 15 years of FFs: Food was rated "OK" to "bland", nothing really stood out except for the chicken pie spring rolls. "Their 'insprired comfort food' was uninspired and not particularly comforting." Service was "abysmal", made worse by "constant apologizing". "Two weeks after a great write-up in the Boston Globe and they weren't anticipating a busy Friday evening? Please." $$ [28]

Diner Comments: While the "unremarkable" decor was "not the most elegant experience," it's "definately no old Country Buffet either" and diners agreed there while the sushi was'nt "inventive", there was "an amazing array" of "fresh" "appetizing" food, "excellent [service] for a buffet" and "all in all, [it was] great fun"where "you get your money's worth!" $$ [40]

Diner Comments: "Tasty" food, "efficient" service and a "good value" in a "casual atmosphere" that is "a step up from a lunch counter to be...charming." The "Jaffa Feast for 2 is a great value." $$ [28]

Diner Comments: Mixed reviews on the food and service, but all agreed on the horrible truth that Tim's steak dinner "was overcooked ... twice" and "chefs should be flogged in public for overcooking good beef." Making matters worse "nothing was comped" for the error(s). "As with their other restaurant, 5 Burner (a former FF with the worst scores EVER) this place just doesn't live up to its potential." $$$ [42]

Diner Comments: The "lovely" patio and "charming" "warm" interior couldn't redeem the "lamentable" "inconstant" service and generally "disappointing" and "flavorless" food which rated an overall reaction of "meh." [N.B. Note the much better ratings when we visited for FF #70? We did notice the Best of Boston awards stopped in 2007] $$[32]

Diner Comments: "Good" to "Tasty" food (including their "signature poutine" -- in 3 versions); "attractive, comfortable" interior; "Consistently" "Utterly extraordinary" service; and "reasonable prices" make for a place "to come back to again and again" and a First Friday Fave $$$ [42]

Diner Comments: It's all about the sushi, as "extensive and creative," "delicious" sushi (and a "yummy beef soba soup") trumped the "terrible wine list," the "cute" waiter "who dissappeared after an attentive start", and the "Wagamama meets Apple Store" aesthetic of the place where" bamboo and a ginger jar" did not make it "[more like] Toyko." [N.B.: one much larger order, split among the group raised the average price.] $$$$[52]

Diner Comments: Most thought "the crust was great" but the toppings were "bland", though a couple of us thought the toppings were "delicious," but we all agree the "kitschy" bowling alley setting was fun, and the service was "great" -- not to mention "big-ass" drinks. $$ [33]

Diner Comments: From the "honest and uncomplicated", but"impressive" food and "well done cocktails", to the "swank" dining room and "intimate" bar which made you feel "miles from Harvard Sq," this place won us all over as a unanimous FF Favorite, despite the "sad" but "efficient" waitress. (The mistaken free crab cake app didn't hurt either!). A "resplendent" end to the year of FFs - where Gastropubs clearly ruled the day! $$$$[50]
